| Novel protest for water
in Savarkundla |
RAJKOT. Citizens of Savarkundla town resorted to a novel way of protest
on Wednesday against the non-availability of water by taking out a
fanas (lantern) procession.
About 150 persons participated in the procession, while an equal
number climbed on the terraces of their buildings to ring the bell
to wake the administration up from its deep slumber and realise
that they are duty-bound to provide drinking water.
Savarkundla town has not received water for the past fortnight.
Leading citizens of the town have also formed a committee and threatened
to launch an intensive agitation if the water problems are not solved
within the next five days.
Committee members said that water supply from Mahi-Pariej is the
only solution to their woes.
And despite the fact that the water sump is just 14 km away from
the town, water supply board officials have not taken any step to
make it operational.
Of the 55 bores drilled, 9 failed, 22 went dry after the water
reserves exhausted, and the water level in the rest have gone down
considerably leaving them virtually of no use.
