Dear Ms Sucheta,
Shocked to learn the sad and
sudden demise of Dr Anil Agarwal. In a previous letter I compared his work for the blue
revolution in India to that of Dr V.Kurien's white revolution.
CSE is his greatest legacy left behind and I am sure it will keep Dr Agarwal's memory
fresh for years to come by continuing his noble work. My condolences to the bereaved
family.

its rather sad to
note that Mr. Agarwal is no more with us. His contribution in creating awareness amongst
masses on environmental issues and his advocacy drive amongst policy makers, seems
irreparable at this juncture of time. I only wish that he lives in us, forever, and help
us contribute towards protecting Mother Earth.

Homage to Shri
Anil Agarwal
Passing away
of some person always hurts us, especially of such people who are of such animportance
to the nation & the globe. Anilji is one of them. I believe in such souls who
never die but are immortal because their life does not end with their hysical
passing away but only when their life mission doesn't continue. But for Anilji it is
not nly nationally but internationally too he has imbibed in all of us a culture of care
and concern for the environment which we shall foster. It is his mission that all of
us should bring into action and continue with it with a firm and sincere commitment
that would be a true homage to our dear Anilji. It should not remain confined in
words but should show through action or else it would have no meaning.
I believe firmly
in action and it is the timely inaction on various environmental issues all these years
that I feel succumbed Anilji to such ailments. Its high time that we all need to come
together in full cooperation to remedy the environmental problems without any further
delay. Promises by the ministries & politicians as well as rules & laws only on
paper cannot work. Receiving applauds and laurels is not what is required at this
juncture. What relevance all that has when the very mission for which the recipient
of so many awards strove for is nottransformed into action?
Our
environment today is in such a critical state both nationally as well as internationally,
but hardly is anything being done sincerely to rectify it. However, all the various
efforts that are undertaken is infinitesimally smaller than a drop in the ocean while the
rate at which the deterioration is taking place is much faster than the supersonic rate.
I would just
conclude by saying that Anilji is with us and will be with us till the time we continue
with his mission. My homage to Anilji would be that I commit myself to the cause of our
MOTHER EARTH till my last breath while at the same time motivating as many
more for it.
To the Agarwal
family I have this message.

I am deeply
shocked and saddened at the news of Anil Agarwal's death.I met Anil at the IUCN's 50th
Anniversary Celebration in Fountainbleau, France. I found him to be a very viable,
knowledgable, compassionate human being. He seemed full of spirit and in good health.
Regarding the latter, I realize appearances can be deceiving, or maybe his illness
developed ater.
Please extend my
deepest sympathy to Anil's family. friends and colleagues and let me know how I can
contribute in some way to celebrate Anil's life, other than working with even greater zeal
to protect nature globally.

To Colleagues at
CSE,
It is very sad to
hear, so early in teh new year, that this great environmentalist and development
advocate has passed away. The international development community has lost a key ally, and
India has lost a great social activist. I am grateful for the opportunity to beexposed to
his innovative ideas when he visited UNDP Headquarters in New
York over the last few years, while I was Programme Manager there for India. UNDP was
fortunate to have collaborated with him on a number of initiatives global, regional and
country level initiatives (including one on "green ratings for industry" with
UNDP India).
Please accept my
deepest condolences on this tremendous loss and, if possible, please convey my condolences
to his family. I hope the CSE team will carry on its good work as a continuing tribute to
him, and that the newsletter will continue to be a source of important information on
international and South Asian environment and development.
With kind regards,

I would like to say how saddened I was at the news of Anil Agarwal's passing away. As a
science journalist interested in environment and development issues I learned much
from Anil that benefited me professionally and personally. I first met Anil when I worked
at New Scientist magazine in London in the early 1980s and since then I Always valued the
time that Anil generously gave me during my visits to South Asia. I am sure that he will
be remembered in this way by many all over theworld and the legacy of his environmental
and communications work continue to inspire us.

Dear Sunita and
the CSE family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on Anil's demise. It will always seem that he has
gone away too soon. India has lost its foremost warrior of environment. It was my good
fortune to have interacted with him and CSE through you. His dedication and committment to
the cause of a better tomorrow shall always have a lasting impact on anyone who ever
came near him. May God rest his soul in peace and give you (and the Movement) the strength
to bear his loss.

All colleages of
CSE and family members of Mr. Agarwal. I express my deep concerns. I am very shocked. The
demise of Mr. Agarwal is a great loss for developing countries like ours in the present
situations when WTO and USA are planning to use the Earth Summit 2002 for their business
purposes. He was a great fighter for the cause to save the country's soveignerity. He
first exposed role of the North regarding environment among the people of our country.
Environment concern people of India as well as developing countries will always remember
him for his role to fight against the expliotation by the North on the south in the
name of improving environment. DTE is a noble contribution from CSE under his leadership.
I expect from all the colleages of CSE to carry his views and approach and will improve
DTE more than his expectation.
