CSE RATING ON 'GREENEST' CAUSTIC-CHLORINE INDUSTRIES  REVEALS OVERALL DISMAL PERFORMANCE, GOVERNMENT APATHY

The rating uncovered tardy government action despite environmental and health hazards of this 'mother of all industries'. Some companies turn common salt into a toxic concoction and leave a lethal mercury trail.

Chemfab Alkalis, Shriram Alkalis & Chemicals, and Indian Rayon & Industries were among only seven companies awarded CSE's 'Three Leaves Award'. No company qualified for the coveted 'Five Leaves Award'.

The unbiased environmental rating, based on voluntary participation and transparency, is conducted by an independent organisation.

Former Finance Minister Dr Manmohan Singh presented the awards to industry heads, including several CEOs and MDs at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on Sept. 2. "We are on the threshold of new  challenge," he said. "Industries should lead the way in order to live in harmony with nature and as an obligation to our unborn generation."
