| What is Agriculture? |
Agriculture need not
conjure up images of a lone farmer ploughing his field. It is very much an industry today
as any other. Botanists, engineers, scientists, production managers, and marketing
managers are all a part of the modern agriculture industry. Agricultural products from
India occupy an increasingly important position in the global market. |

| The main work areas include: |

| Farming:Farming includes
activities such sowing, harvesting, marketing and other aspects of field work. |
| Agro industry: Agro-industry
includes industries that sell raw or processed farm products and those that farm products
for further commercial use. |
| Research: Research is
required to develop new and better varieties of seeds and plants which are high yielding
and have a greater resistance to pests and diseases. |

| Entry |
Previously it was
believed that no formal training is required for those in farming and allied courses.
However with increasing technology persons in these field do require some formal training
is advisable for those in research and in agro-industrial area. |

| Studies required |
Candidates may enter
this field by acquaring a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture with science background at the
10+2 level. For a post graduation in Agriculture BSc. in Agricultue is required. For
courses in Agricultural engineering those with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and
Agriculture is required |

| Salary |
Post graduates working
in the government as Technical Officer/Assistant director can expect a salary ranging from
Rs.7,500 to 10,500 along with the usual government allowances. Junior scientific officer
and Research Assistants can also expect to fall under the same pay scale.
Graduates start at a low scale which could range from Rs.6000 to Rs.8000.salary in the
private sector and slightly higher in research organizations. |
