        | Something Fishy... |

        The breeding
of fish is a relatively new industry in India. Around the globe, fish forms more than
seventy per cent of non-vegetarian food. This has thrown open doors for trained personnel
in various aspects of the industry such as acquiring, preserving and marketing the fish.

There are many departments of the fishing industry that call for professionals or trained
personnel. At the outset, fish biologists study streams and lakes where fishing takes
place to determine the quantity of fish available, whether or not steps in infection
prevention are necessary and the extent of water pollution. Other tasks handled by trained
people include preservation, freezing and canning, which are done at factories. Fishery
experts are also called upon to handle domestic and export marketing research and
preservation of marine life. Students usually work on fish breeding farms or supervise
        fish research centres.

With industrial waste mixing with river water, marine life has come to be affected badly,
reducing supply significantly. To reduce the gap between supply and demand, fish
hatcheries have come up. Professionals and fishery experts run these hatcheries.

Yet another aspect of fishing industry is prawn and shrimp farming, which is emerging as a
        big export oriented industry. |

        There are graduate and
post graduate (B. Sc. and M.Sc.) Fishery Science courses available at certain colleges and
institutions. The pre-requisite for the B Sc Fishery Science is biology at the plus two
level. The prerequisites for post graduation courses is B Sc in zoology or Fishery science |
