Participants at the first regional meeting in Visakhapatnam focused on the idea of
"people-centric" sustainable development. They pinpointed strong local
governance as a key step towards  successful resource management, and highlighted
examples of existing programs that are working towards this goal. Participants
simultaneously called for increased sensitization and responsibility within the national

      November 22, 2001 New Delhi
    Focus on being proactive, rather
    than reactive
At a meeting to prepare for the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD) in New Delhi, South Asian groups emphasised the need for
developing countries to suggest solutions, rather than simply identify problems.
In barely nine months, world leaders will meet in
Johannesburg to take stock of global progress towards sustainable development since the
1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The (WSSD) is currently
scheduled for August 26 to September 4, 2002, Unlike UNCED, where preparations began well
in advance, very little has been achieved so far to ensure a successful outcome at WSSD.To
