Media Briefing Workshops

Media briefing workshops conducted by MRC are primarily aimed at demystifying key environmental issues for the benefit of the media, so that it gets a basic understanding of the subject. This, in turn, helps the media report on the issues more effectively. The unit has organised national, South Asian as well as regional workshops on water issues, global environmental governance and vehicular air pollution in the past. Last year, the unit organised three workshops – the first of these was a South Asian conclave on pesticide contamination and food safety, which was conducted over two days in New Delhi in August for media people from all over South Asia. It was attended by journalists from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. A comprehensive Briefing Document on the subject was published on the occasion of this workshop. Two regional workshops – one in Bhubaneshwar on ‘Ecology as a Source of Sustainable Livelihoods’ and the other in Varanasi on ‘Arsenic in Groundwater in Uttar Pradesh’ – followed later in the year.
