| Rainwater harvesting becomes mandatory in Bangalore |
|
|
Karnataka state cabinet has recently announced that rainwater harvesting will be compulsory in all the newly constructed buildings of Bangalore.
Previously in the year 2004, the state government issued Government order making rainwater harvesting mandatory for all new constructions. But the rule was hardly followed. In 2008, Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board issued orders that no water and sanitary connections would be given to new buildings unless the owners install a properly designed rainwater harvesting system. Even the board announced concession on property tax for the house owners who had implemented such system. All these steps hardly worked and the state cabinet in February 2009 finally announced that all the newly constructed buildings will have to adopt rain water harvesting facility. For this the state cabinet had decided to amend the clause 72 A of the BWSSB Act of 1964.
All residential buildings with an area of 2400 sq ft (223 sq m) or above have to install the system according to the new law. Some time relaxation will be given to the owners of the old buildings.
A.R. Shiva Kumar of Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology (KSCST) is very happy with the state cabinet’s announcement. According to him the cabinet will soon come out with the written circular
