What we do

In an effort to provide targeted information and source contacts to researchers, planners, NGOs and journalists, CSE’s Database Unit compiles data and contact information on Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), Inter-Government Organisations, Research Centres, State and Government departments, Journalists, Photographers, Scientists, etc, working on environment and development issues, including Forest, Water, Health, Natural Resource, Wildlife, Biodiversity, Air Pollution, Climate Change, River Pollution and Sacred Groves. This core database is updated daily.

Data collected by the unit is also used to prepare comprehensive contact directories on various specialised areas, including water harvesting, environmental health, and climate change, among others.

These contact directories help activists, NGOs, researchers and government departments to network, dialogue and strengthen capacities of groups and individuals working on natural resources. All directories include the names, addresses, telephones, and wherever possible, the e-mail and website information of individuals and institutions. The databank is constantly updated and the unit provides the latest contact information.

The unit assembled information for WATER LINKS–2, a directory of individuals and organisations involved in water harvesting in India and abroad, which has grown to become the backbone to the national water harvesters’ network initiated by CSE. Similarly, Health Links, a directory on environmental health includes contact information on experts on environmental health worldwide.

Natural Resource Links is another directory prepared by the unit. It collected scattered information from annual reports of the respective government institutions, state information centres, and various government ministries, etc.

In addition, the unit also collects information about people who share CSE’s concern for the environment and equitable development strategies. A fortnightly newsletter, What’s New at CSE keeps CSE friends and other stakeholders regularly informed about the institution’s activities and needs.
