The first summit was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and was called the "Earth Summit" – an opportunity to debate on the "common good" of all the people of the world. Over the last ten years, the increasing divide between the North and the South has reduced sustainable development negotiations to ineffectual talk-shops for trade benefits, with "common good" receding farther and farther away
